UNV Foch - Information and Character Sheets

In 2025, the solution to all of mankind's problems was activated: the fusion reactor. Using the old CERN complex to house the machine, the Tokamak deuterium fusion reactor was not what one would consider efficient. It took another decade for the technology to be perfected, but it succeeded. The energy crisis disappeared, and wars stopped as humansno longer needed to fight over what little oil was left. By 2050, 90% of the world's power requirements were covered by nuclear fusion, another 6% was nuclear fission, and 4% came from wind farms and solar energy. It was a new era of prosperity for mankind, one that seemed to last forever.

The next leap came in 2051, when the first true Helium-3 isotope reactor became operational near Cairo. The machine was much more efficient than its predecessors, and begun the next space race for one simple fact: Helium-3 existed predominantly on the moon. By 2060, the industry had boomed to such a degree that if one wanted to head to the moon, they could just wait an hour for the next transport.

Humanity expanded from there. Colonies were created on Mars, Europa and Titan, and the solar system's asteroid belt became a buzzing hive of mining stations and robotic excavators. The age of Sol's supernations came, and the entire system was divided into several states. The European Union, which had been one of the first to implement fusion technology, the United Systems Coalition, a collection of the nations of America and Israel, the African Federation, the Arab League, the Oceanic Union, the Russian Federation and the Asian Coalition. They all worked together under the flag of the United Nations, expanding throughout the system.

When the first jump drive was activated in 2097, it attracted the attention of the already existing galactic community. Humanity was approached by a council of races, presided by the race that became known as the 'Alarei', and was offered membership. After much reluctance, it accepted and entered a new era of prosperity. By 2130, humans had colonized six systems and had military outposts on twelve more. The United Nations Fleet was the single largest spacefaring navy known to the Council.

The beasts known as Supercarriers became a testament to human ingenuity. The concept of drone combat had been known to the council for centuries, but it was humans that first put real pilots into the cockpits of fighter craft and dedicated entire ships to house them. By 2134, there were fourteen such beasts in existence; the USS Enterprise, the USS Nimitz, the EUV Thatcher, the UNV Foch, the HMS Majestic, the UNV Troy, the ACV Ghandi, the RFS Gorbachev, the USS Paton, the AUS Cairo, the UNV Curie, RFS Petersburg, EUV Protector and the UNV Orion. Dozens more battleships, cruisers and destroyers were owned by humanity.

It is at that time that the council decided that humans were a threat.

It is now 2137. For three years, the Galactic Council has been pushing humanity to dismantle most of its navy and sign a treaty that limits its number of ships and colonies. Some see it as the next step to peace, some see it as a threat to human dominance.

You are a pilot for the United Nations, either a veteran or someone straight out of the academy. Three weeks ago, an accident on the UNV Foch, one of the fourteen supercarriers, cost the lives of almost half the ship's fighter pilots. You have been transferred to the Foch's flight wing in the midst of increasing tensions between humanity and the Council.

As promised, here is the first tie-in to Amongst the Stars. Foch will cover the Alarei wars and explore humanity's actions during it as it transforms from a race drunken by its success to one stricken by war.

Everything is fairly simple; the characters are pilots from various nations transferred to the UNV Foch, a Majestic-class supercarrier. The story will take the crew through the various planets and events of the AtS universe, including Sol, Alpha Centauri and the Alarei home worlds.

Big posts at slow intervals are much preferred over constant one-line posts, as that will allow us to explore the setting better.

Much of the time will take place aboard the actual supercarrier, but there will be plenty of fighter combat segments when called for.

Please do not make stereotypical or one-dimensional characters.

Physical Description: A young man with dark hair, vibrant blue eyes and a muscular appearance.

Backstory: Born to Robert Alva and Lucy Willington, Frederik was inspired by his father's military science work, but didn't feel as much for the academic side of things, instead opting to join the air force academy. Capable and rational, just like his father, he's had little trouble working his way up the ladder. There's much to be desired for his social capabilities, however.

Physical Description: A man barely out of his twenties, possessing dark brown hair, with slight flecks of blonde and light brown eyes. He possesses a somewhat muscular, well-looked after physique, yet retaining what some might consider a 'light' build. His left forearm is missing, in it's place a cybernetic replacement, which looks rather organic if it weren't for the 'shine' that it seems to retain giving it awa. Faded burn scars would be located around the back of his hand and up his forearm, whilst on the back of his neck would be a tattoo featuring the British Flag whilst another would feature the words 'Peckham and Proud'.

Backstory: Born in Peckham as the second child to a single mother who'd been left to raise her children by an uncaring, layabout father, Nathan's childhood was far from luxurious. At the time, Britain was suffering from overpopulation, and areas like Peckham were plagued with both economic, social and crime-related issues.

From a young age, Nathan got involved with local gangs, and by the age of twelve he was making what he called 'pocket money' via theft of what he could get. Sometimes it'd be a Toshiba Q-X51 Laptop, others it'd be jewelrey. Generally, it varied on what he could get, but things ended soon caught up to him.

Being in a gang, the Peckham Boys, he ended up being exposed to more than a little violence, and got into several fights of his own. Then, a rival gang of the Peckham Boys, the G.A.S, which stood for Guns and Shanks, began to step up its long-running war with the Peckham Boys, having managed to obtain a number of firearms and other weaponry which had been 'lost' from T.A Shipments originally headed for the British Colony 'Victoria'.

Wanting to send a message, the G.A.S decided to target not just members of the Peckham Boys, but their families and friends, too. Close friends of Nathan's, also members of the Peckham Boys, died in shootouts and stabbings, whilst his family recieved death threats and were constantly harrassed, which also involved his flat being vandalised and scrawled upon with graffiti. Eventually, it culminated in an attempt on Nathan's life, which unfortunately, led to both his mother and older sister being seriously injured, whilst Nathan escaped with minor injuries.

Following this and realising what he was getting into, Nathan cut all ties with the gangs and his family moved elsewhere in Peckham, though the guilt would remain with him for some time. At the earliest opportunity, at age 17, he enlisted in the RAF as a pilot, wanting to make something of himself and put the past behind him.

From there, he underwent flight school and trained at the James Edgar Johnson Training Facility on the Moon, where he learned how to operate in Zero Gravity Environments, amongst other things, and by the age of nineteen, he'd graduated training and had earned his pilot's license. Following this, he ended up being assigned to a reserve unit on Europa, where he saw very little 'action', nor did he see any on the various other locations he was assigned to during the first two years of his service.

Eventually, his first 'real taste of action' began after being assigned to the colony world of Victoria, which at the time was still quite vulnerable to attack, as the defense network was yet to be completed. Due to this, the anti-colonisation, pro-isolationist terrorist cell referring to themselves as 'The Guardians' took this as an opportunity to lead an attack on the poorly-defended colony with their own fleet of ships, most of which were refitted cargo transports or vessels stolen from military installations.

After his squadron's commanding officer and several others were shot down, the chain of command soon fell down to Nathan, who, whilst somewhat inexperienced in regards to leadership, was able to successfully fend off the terrorist attack by leading a counter-offensive against their fighters and one of their rogue frigates, which led to the terrorists' defeat. Nathan recieved commendation for this, and would go on to serve in the Royal Air Force for seven more years up until his transfer to the United Nations.

At some point, his fighter suffered a malfunction during a routine training exercise on New Manchester, which led to an engine failure and causing him to crash into the desert after his ejection-seat failed to activate. In the process, Nathan was severely injured, losing his left forearm in the process and sustaining burns to his other arm, which would later be treated via a cybernetic replacement arm being fitted and synthetic skin grafts applied, respectively.

Recently, he was transferred to the UNV Foch.

Name: Audrey Sinclair
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Nationality: Canada (USC)
Rank: Captain
Service Length: 5 years as USAF pilot, 6 years as UN pilot.

Blood Group: AB-

Physical Description:

Taking after her mother, Audrey is rather short for a pilot, standing at just 5'5. Her eye colour borders between dull blue and gray, while her hair colour could barely be called blond. Much like the rest of her appearance, her hair is kept in a ponytail that is barely within Air Force regulations, and she hardly ever wears a dress uniform, instead opting for simple navy camouflage fatigues. The 177th USAF Fighter Wing's emblem has been tattoed on her right arm, while she lacks any surgical scars. Despite her small frame, she has managed to keep herself on par with the rest of the squadron, and is a bit muscular for a pilot.

Backstory: Audrey Sinclair was born on the 12th of August 2110 in the city of Vancouver. While her family name was Sinclair, "Dysfunctional" would be much more fitting. Robert Sinclair, the father, was a hardass military officer who wouldn't accept anything less than perfection. He never treated his children like anything more than little soldiers, on their way to becoming the perfect marines he was so desperate to leave as his legacy. The mother, Patricia Sinclair, was an abusive alcoholic with more psychological issues than anyone could count. The oldest child, Laura, was as bad as both of the parents. She was almost never at home, and when she was, she constantly blamed everyone else for her misery. The only real support the young Audrey ever had was her older brother Carl, the buffer between the family and her.

The family followed the father around various marine bases on Earth, including New York, Alamo Bay, Anchorage and the USS Washington, a Lincoln class sea supercarrier. Every year, they moved, and that left no time for Audrey and Carl to develop any real friends; the only friends they had were each other. A few days after Audrey's 14th birthday, her mother died from a deadly mix of sedatives and alcohol. A few days after that, Carl enlisted in the Marines. Audrey was once again left alone with the people she despised.

At the age of 16, she enlisted in the United Systems Air Force. Her father was furious: he wanted a marine, not a pilot. After a heated fight, she left and never returned home. She passed officer school with flying colours, thanks to just how competitive she had grown up to be, and was admitted into the Spacefighter Aviation Programme.

It was there that her instructors realized she was a natural. While she was not exactly USAF's poster child, thanks to her competitive and disobedient nature, she aced all fighter simulations. Within a few months, she got to fly her first real fighter, an old F22 Raptor used to train pilots at Groom Lake. It was not a long flight; it lasted less than ten minutes, not including takeoff and landing, but it gave her a purpose. She trained hard, studied hard, and finally managed to fly an F-36 Cobra MKI. The success did not come without cost, however. During a zero-gravity vacuum survival exercise, someone failed to check her suit for leaks before depressurizing the chamber. By the time she noticed, she was gasping for air and unable to speak, thanks to the lack of an atmosphere. By the time the instructor noticed and called for medics, she was barely alive. It took several weeks in a pressure chamber, but she eventually returned to flight duty.

She had barely earned her first lieutenant bars when she was recommended for the United Nation's Joint Military Programme, thanks to her aptitude for flight and impressive training record. She was posted aboard the UNV Troy, one of the newest supercarriers in the fleet. The adjustment period to get used to the different fighters and operating proceedures used by UN carriers, influenced by European design, was hard. Nevertheless, she eventually got used to flying the Locust Joint Strike Fighters used aboard the Troy.

With the Troy entering a six-month refit at the Albert Einstein shipyards, most of the pilots are in the process of being transfered to other bases and ships. Captain Sinclair was reassigned to the UNV Foch, which is scheduled to finish its refit within a few weeks before returning to perimeter duties.

Name: Bolodenka Kaminochov
Age: 45
Gender: Male
Nationality: Belorussian (born on Europa)
Rank: Major
Service Length: 9 years in RFAF, 18 years within the UN.

Blood Group: O+

Physical Description:
An extremely slim and old soldier, standing at about 6'6" feet tall, after being born on Europa. His face wrinkled and pale from ages in space, he is extremely deft and healthy for the amount of years he has spent outside of Earth's orbit. Due to an extreme lack of exercise on a low gravity planet in an early age, he is weak on his feet. His eyes are a grey-hazel haze, and he usually cuts his hair bald.

Backstory: Born to a pair of Belorussian biologists from the Russian Federation on the surface of Europa, he grew up as a lab-kid within a forward observation and study post of 98 people, wandering around the corridors and ogling at the space above him. With the low gravity and lack of exercise as a young child, he grew extremely tall due to the low gravity. Several defects in his bones were soon recognized and much of his bone marrow was replaced by artificial plastic plating to keep his bones in place at age five, which were periodically replaced every time he grew. He went through rigorous study to eventually replace his parents, but he was often considered slow and brawny.

A man tired of being chained, he fled the station through the airlocks at age 18. Fitting himself with an EVA suit, he forgot to put his set his oxygen canister on when entering the icy surface of Europa. Shortly after exiting the station, the alert docks recovered his unconscious body.

After extreme frostbite, he had extreme nerve ending damage to one of his hands. Much of his left hand was replaced with a biotic, tissue-like substance with artificial nerves. His parents, extremely disappointed to find their prodigy this way, declared that he was not fit to ever replace his parents. Considered incompetent, his parents shunned him. They gave him thousands of earned credits and ordered him to take a shuttle to Earth.

In Earth, he found a worse life. He walked around bustling cities, too amazed to even settle. He felt crowded in, surrounded, and often times alienated due to being a colonist. Unable to find a working job, what little money he had was lost to several bets and purchasing a shanty apartment. Not able to afford his shanty apartment, he was launched into the streets. With no other options, he enlisted in the RFAF.

In flight school, he excelled more than he had in biology. A knack for mechanics and fighter training, he worked his way up to eventually fight for the UN.

Name: Eamon James Murphy

Age: 28

Gender: Male

Nationality: Australia, OU

Rank: 2nd Lieutenant

Service Length: 4 years in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and nearly 2 serving in the UN.

Blood Group: O-

Physical Description: Eamon is a red-haired male standing at 175 centimeters. His medium frame, weighing in at a modest 71 kilograms, isn't muscular, but does hold a light athletic build. His voice is light, but raspy, perhaps due to his tendency to keep his mouth shut to hide his slightly crooked and off-coloured teeth. His wavy medium length hair is parted from the right with the sides being neatly combed back around his ears which seems to emphasize his rather short, but full, beard. His blue eyes are surrounded by very light skin, in comparison to the tone seen elsewhere on his body. This goggle-tan is the work of a pair of flight goggles, circular in shape and tinted a very dark green.

Backstory:
Eamon was born outside of Sydney to become the third child in his house. Their father, James Murphy, owned a transportation company while their mother, Dana, was a Flight Lieutenant in the RAAF. Eamon and his two older brothers, Caland and Ryan, would lose their mother after the birth of their sister, Naui - born only a month after Eamon's second birthday and would later pass herself. Caland, as the oldest, would be the first to honour his mother - joining the RAAF in 2119. This would not go well, however. Only a few years later, Caland was discharged for misconduct, but his training did not go to waste.

Their father's business, until this point, had focused purely in the Indonesian-Oceanic area, with road-trains still going across the continent and cargo ships fighting against the waves - forms of travel that had been antiquated quickly since the Helium Rush. In 2121, less than a year after Caland's dismissal, the first of the Moon transport ships were being retired. Caland, now 18, convinced his father to purchase the scrapped shuttle in hopes of reviving the business and open the doors to interstellar transport. Ryan, 16, was intrigued by this, but could not bear to see his mother's legacy be tainted by his older brother. He soon left for training, leaving Eamon, now 14, alone with his eldest brother.

The two now spent most of their time flying, setting up their own charter to the Moon a year later, after Eamon dropped out of school. Eamon quickly became a rather good pilot, but he was no ace. Most of his airtime was as a co-pilot to his brother, but as business grew, so did their father's fleet. A second shuttle was introduced on Eamon's twentieth birthday, but he was now tasked with goods transport - most of which were flights confined to Earth's atmosphere. This frustrated Eamon, as he could no longer fly where he had found solace - in orbit. Eamon left his father's company for the RAAF at age twenty-two.

He excelled as an enlisted and eventually became an officer after merit and recommendation to candidate school, but, after only four years, Eamon was taken into the UN force in humanity's effort to protect its assets. Now, on the UNV Foch...
