Arkech Bazzar_by_jasonj05

Arkech: Population 18000, primarily human, some other civilized races. The city is built around a great market square. It is governed by a noble aristocrat, the human lord Shanaz, though a hierarchy of priests wields limited power. Arkech was devastated by warfare long ago, and many buildings are empty or in ruins.

"Keep going, brothers. We are almost there."

An expedition of eight monks wander through the desert, carrying a steel rebar along with them with the symbol of Jute, a statuette of a man standing on a ship. The men sweat profusely, and four monks lie on top of several camels being brought along with the expedition. They approach the city gates of Arkech, having bribed and cajoled their way to the city in an attempt to spread the light and word of Jute by decree of the Emperor, to return after their success or the word of an envoy. Along with the monks comes a thin, tan-skinned translator and a man dressed with blue, linen clothing.

The monks do not make much of an impact, it seems that their journey was all in vain. Many had given them the cold shoulder, or just flat out ignored them and continued on with their day. The shopkeepers turned them back to the streets, not wanting to have anything to do with them.

The sun was at its highest point and the streets were empty. The only men in the street would be the monks and their translator and some of the locals closing their shops for what was about to happen. Then, without warning, men dressed in white linen robes and turban-esque headgear, many of them having beards other not. They had started to come from seemingly nowhere. The group of men had formed a mob around the priests and their translator, coming to grab them and "escort" them elsewhere.

They are forcefully drug into the market center. There the rest of the populace, parting like the red sea for the group of linen clad men. They populace had formed a circle around the ivory spire in the middle of the market. No one was waiting for them; they were simply forced to their knees as they came to the raised platform. The city was quiet, only the sound of the wind being heard.

Simultaneously, or as close as one could say - the ceremonial blades of the holy men were drawn, all but the one manhandling the interpreter. The crowd watched in awe, waiting for what was about to happen next, and everyone knew what that was. The blades were drug across the throats of the foreign holy men; the open throats are positioned away from the ivory tower and being drained into the crowd. Whilst being drained, they were disemboweled, cut from sternum to waist. Wounds were opened and they wore their own organs as decoration, soon being hung from their feet and hung from the tower, entrails dangling and swaying in the wind.

The white linen of the men was stained red with the blood of their enemy. The man keeping the interpreter in place finally had acted. A sharp whistle emitted from his lips, a bucket of pitch was brought to the demonstration, and poured onto their kinsman. The linen clad man then began to draw runes in the pitch, he stepped back, and looked to the crowd, and gaze panning over them and then back to the pitch covered man. A talisman was drawn from the holy man’s linens. He pressed it against the head of the rune covered man. A fire started at his knees and quickly travelled upwards and then fully engulfed the man. The crowd then erupted, cheering and praise all about. The stained holy men then disappeared into the crowd, leaving their work on display for everyone and anyone to see.

An envoy of at least thirty guards and a man dressed in red make their perilous journey across mountain, desert, plain, and hill several months after the incident. This time, the Sipeon soldiers are heavily armored Sipeon Cataphractoi elite. They approach the gates, theirs eyes on a distant tower dangling eight small figures with string upon them. The envoy bears a letter this time, the soldiers halting several hundred feet before the portcullis of the city. The envoy speaks up in extremely broken Qatark.

"I have letter from Emperor of the Most Illustrious and Holy Sipeos!"

The men of the guard laughed at the sight of the Sipeons, the Commander of the Watch makes his way down from the moderate sized guard house, treading through the sand towards the envoy and his escort, he comes forward and leaves about one hundred feet between he and the envoy, responding in his native tongue of Qatark.

"Read the letter where you stand, you would not want to turn out like your Holymen and their translator!"

He found humor in his little joke and chuckled, his face returning to its previous expression, hard and stern. He squinted as he waited for the man to reply, slowly adjusting his linen head wrap.

The man clears his throat, unfolding a scroll. He holds the bottom with one hand, the top with one hand as well.

"The Emperor demands that all men responsible for the killings of his royal envoy, an envoy for peace and nothing else, be sent to our custody for just punishment for the murders they committed. If the noblemen of Qatark refuse, there will exist a state of war between Sipeos and Qatark."
