what it lacks for in the graphics department, it makes up for in user functionality and the vast variety of custom maps. i remember picking up reign of chaos and its expansion around eight years prior. the amount of hours i have lost to this game has to be around the amount of time i have spent in garrysmod.

the campaigns, in my opinion, are some of the most enjoyable in a strategy game. i recommend picking up these two gems if you have not played the campaigns. they hold more weight if you enjoy the warcraft lore, nevertheless, it is still contains a bundle of interesting campaigns that are told from the different points of the four playable races. frozen throne includes a blood elf campaign, humans with modified units, as well as an rpg set a few months before wow.

Warcraft 3 was fucking great.

I remember a lot of the custom maps I use to play.

arthas menethil was a bad character, needed more insight on the gilnean side of the conflict.

there's a few of custom maps i still remember:

island defense
the dota maps and its respective knockoffs.
DOAW/Azeroth Wars
some zombie type game with marines: Undead Assault.
several custom maps that featured vampires/werewolves with the other players being peasants who built up defenses and gathered resources.
every single goddamn risk map.

i'm barely scratching the surface with this list. there is a literal mountain of custom content for warcraft 3
